When you're shopping for a credit card, be sure to ask:
- What's the annual percentage rate (APR) for:
- Purchases?
- Balance transfers?
- Cash advances?
- Is my interest rate an introductory rate?
- If my APR can change, under what circumstances can it change? What will the APR be in those instances?
- What is the method used to calculate the interest due on any outstanding balances?
- What are all the fees associated with this credit card:
- Annual fee?
- Late payment fee?
- Returned check fee?
- Cash advance fee?
- Balance transfer fee?
- Over-limit fee?
- Can these fees change? If so, how will I be notified?
- What is my credit limit?
- Is there a grace period from the time I make a purchase until the time interest on that purchase begins to accrue?
- When are my monthly statements mailed to me and when will my minimum monthly payment on the account be due?
- If it is a rewards (or "points" or loyalty) card, ask: How do I earn points? Can I lose points? How? Do the points expire?
