Choosing a Credit Card

When you're shopping for a credit card, be sure to ask:

  • What's the annual percentage rate (APR) for:
    • Purchases?
    • Balance transfers?
    • Cash advances?
  • Is my interest rate an introductory rate?
  • If my APR can change, under what circumstances can it change? What will the APR be in those instances?
  • What is the method used to calculate the interest due on any outstanding balances?
  • What are all the fees associated with this credit card:
    • Annual fee?
    • Late payment fee?
    • Returned check fee?
    • Cash advance fee?
    • Balance transfer fee?
    • Over-limit fee?
    • Can these fees change? If so, how will I be notified?
  • What is my credit limit?
  • Is there a grace period from the time I make a purchase until the time interest on that purchase begins to accrue?
  • When are my monthly statements mailed to me and when will my minimum monthly payment on the account be due?
  • If it is a rewards (or "points" or loyalty) card, ask: How do I earn points? Can I lose points? How? Do the points expire?
