Individual help

If you feel it’s important to get professional help, you might begin your search for a tax expert by asking for recommendations from family or coworkers. One problem is that many people advertise themselves as tax preparers. Some are excellent, but not all of them are.

Borrower beware

If you pay someone to prepare your taxes and you’re offered a tax refund loan, be sure you understand the terms completely. These short-term loans satisfy a financial need for some taxpayers — allowing the borrower to handle pressing, short-term financial obligations. However, it’s important to understand all the fees and the interest rate associated with these loans.

Get it in writing

If you ask an IRS employee for advice, you may want to get the response in writing. Otherwise the agency isn’t responsible if you use incorrect information to complete your tax return.
